2014 Tonys: Jonathan Groff has fun with John Travolta – Idina Menzel introduction

Tony Awards -Every now and then awards shows gives you funny little moments that you certainly do not see coming in advance, and tonight we had one courtesy of Jonathan Groff having a little bit of fun with his introduction of Idina Menzel.

At this point, everyone remembers what happened at the Academy Awards earlier this year when John Travolta introduced her as the “wickedly talented Adele Dazeem.” To this day, nobody really knows what in the world he was up to. So at the Tony Awards this year, Jonathan Groff, while introducing her, chose to introduce her as “the wickedly talented Idina Menzel.”

We’re sure that there are some out there in the press, mostly because of their inability to resist temptation to write silly things from time to time, who will make this out to be all about Groff “slamming” Travolta in some way. We don’t really see it like that. This feels a little bit more like a good-natured jab, and not something that even the “Hairspray” actor is going to take a whole lot of offense out of. After all, he has already laughed at himself and apologized for it already.

In the end, what we should really focus on here is highlight how amazing Idina sounded tonight performing a piece from her new musical “If/Then.” Even though some may know her best still from her role in “Frozen,” she is one of the biggest stars in the history of Broadway with countless big productions under her belt. This is why some will also forever know her for “Wicked.”
