‘Sherlock’ season 4: About that Benedict Cumberbatch – Judi Dench ‘ambush’ story
There is something funny sometimes about watching the way in which the British press writes and hyperventilates over stories, mostly because they really want to try and come up with the most-dramatic version of almost anything that happens.
For one of the latest examples of this very thing, you do not have to look any further than the latest Benedict Cumberbatch headline. You see, the actor has an upcoming BBC adaptation of Richard III coming up, and while at the Hay Festival, he took advantage of an opportunity to supposedly “ambush” Dame Judi Dench and ask her to appear in it. (She promptly said that she would.) There are a myriad of publications out there very much intent on turning this into one of the most dramatic things ever.
But was it really so dramatic at all? We imagine that Cumberbatch probably made Dench aware of this happening long before ever taking the stage, though we imagine that this makes for far less interesting of a story. The two parties, after all, have known each other for a very long time.
Now if Benedict asked her to be a part of a fourth season of “Sherlock,” that would be something to write home about. Heck, we’d at this point settle for just some sort of formal announcement that another season is happening after all of the sitting around and waiting for some big announcement to come. Even though Benedict and Martin Freeman are very busy men, we still assume that an announcement is coming at some point in the future. We’ll just have to wait and see.
