‘Elementary’ season 2 finale review: What happened with Sherlock, Joan, and Mycroft?
Season 2 of “Elementary” was in some ways the season of Mycroft, at least in that the character managed to bookend the season. He was certainly an interesting man … and that is what makes the following sad.
In order to truly escape a target, Sherlock’s brother opted to orchestrate a plan that led to faking his own death, and then disappearing from New York City for good. He saved himself, but he did not do anyone else a favor at all. He left Joan at a time when she and Sherlock were ready to help him move forward and solve what was plaguing him.
Sherlock viewed what his brother did as a very selfish decision, and from there, maybe these two are a little more alike than Sherlock would really like to admit. How else do you explain the closing scene of the episode? Is it possible that Sherlock could relapse just for the sake of getting what he wants? Let’s take a moment here and look at the tapestry of things.
- Sherlock has just witnessed the departure of his brother from New York.
- He has also seen Joan call and look for places that are not under the same roof as him.
- Fearing that the partnership may be coming to an end, Sherlock may try to emotionally guilt her to stick around.
Hopefully, he opts to not go in this direction just for the sake of having Joan still in his life, but who really knows just what sort of twist will come from here? The truth here is that this episode didn’t really leave with a bang or with anything that we were hoping for. Despite it being an entertaining hour for the most part, we cannot help but feel a little empty about the ending of it. Grade: B-.

I’m beginning to get annoyed with the entire passive/aggressive vibe. Can’t he just go to London and hang out with someone named Jill Watson? There’s really getting to be too much baggage between them.

I was very disappointed, especially after the wild twists of the past three episodes, that this just kind of ended with a whimper for me. As much as I have come to really like Mycroft, I think I would have preferred an ending where he actually was the mole or that there was a connection between him and Moriarty rather than this. I really can’t worked up over the possibility of Sherlock going to England and breaking up the partnership with Joan, we just know that is not going to happen, not for more than an episode or so anyway. I had kept hoping that it would all somehow tie in together, that we might find out there had been a plot all along to get rid of Mycroft that may even have involved him being exposed to something that triggered his leukemia. Actually, when Mycroft hugged Sherlock and told him the last year was a ‘gift’, for a few seconds I even wondered if his leukemia had returned and he knew he was living on borrowed time anyway, which is why his ‘death’ seemed an even more reasonable solution to him. Right now, the only thing that may bring me back to watch Season 3 is if they now introduce Sherlock’s father. One would presume he is not in on the ‘secret’, how would Sherlock now deal with his father alone?

I thought it an A-, although I don’t like Sherlock’s playing with his stash of heroin. I hope he is throwing it out rather than intending to emotionally blackmail Joan with it.
