‘The Crimson Field’ episode 5 review: Questions of loyalty (and singing!)
Tonight on “The Crimson Field,” we saw something that was both much-needed and a little bit different for the series: An opportunity for some of the characters to actually relax a little bit.
This episode was a much-need breath of fresh air. There was still a good bit of story development and surprising moments for Grace, but also a reminder about the humanity of these people. After spending such a long stretch of time working on the front lines, of course you are going to have some moments where you want to sit back and unwind a little bit.
Also, there was genuine romance! The show definitely portrayed the reunion properly, and that is something that we have wanted to see at times. Joan made a surprising sacrifice, and it is one that is going to have her loyalty questioned for the episode ahead. This is the reason that she has been so secretive about who she loves and her life away from her job. Eventually, there was a possibility of a situation like this coming up, and wrecking what has been her life as she knows it.
This is a show that is building momentum as we move towards the final week, and in between Joan and Kitty, we have who we believe are two strong characters to rival what we had with Jenny and Chummy on “Call the Midwife.” The show can get a tad depressing from time to time, but it moved at the right pace tonight. The only criticism that we can even offer is that there are moments when the story starts to become a tad predictable for the genre it is in. Grade: B.
