‘American Idol XIII’: Caleb Johnson slams Aerosmith song choice
In the midst of last night’s “American Idol” performance show and what we saw tonight on the results, we somehow missed this very-interesting story when it comes to Caleb Johnson. With that in mind, it is still worth mentioning now just how much he hated having to perform Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want To Miss a Thing” on the show this week at the request of America.
What this tells us more than anything else is that ultimately, the artists had no say at all as to what they were singing this time. Rather than handing a short list of 5-6 choices (unless Caleb really hated all of them), this is what he was handed. We feel like the latter is probably the case, given that the show had these introductions of the fans of the show requesting the songs.
Here is specifically what Caleb had to say in a new People Magazine interview:
“I hate that song. I don’t know why [America chose it]. I guess it was because it was a rock ballad.
“I kind of thought, ‘I’ll just do the best I can and get through it as best as possible and try and make it as believable as possible.’ It was dramatic and had all the candles behind me, so I really like that aspect. But other than that, I hated that song.”
Ultimately, we are of two separate minds about these comments from Caleb. As a member of the media, we love the honesty and that he’s speaking out about something he didn’t care for. From a strategy perspective, we wouldn’t have said this. That person who requested this obviously wanted you to sing this for some reason, so why barf all over their request and act above it publicly? You need fans to win the show.
Granted, Caleb may have gained fans on this end with these comments, even if he lost some elsewhere. We’re tired of hearing this song on the show, and were even before Steven Tyler was a judge.
Luckily for Caleb, he’s going to be around next week, despite the “twist” that the producers introduced that could have saved an artist. Two people votes for an elimination this week, and that’s what we got. If you want more news from us now, sign up for our CarterMatt Newsletter today.
