‘The Following’ season 3 spoilers: Producer on Mark mystery, Ryan’s decision

The latest -The Following” ended its second season on Monday night with an episode that was at times very frustrating, but also still entertaining. While we still feel like the show will continue onward with Ryan Hardy and Joe Carroll like there could still possibly be story left to tell, there was another very interesting mystery that took place in the closing minutes as we saw Mark get in a mysterious truck, and the driver then took off with him to destinations unknown.

Obviously, it was a deliberate move for the show to not show who was behind the wheel of the truck, and this will be addressed at some point in the future. Show executive producer Marcos Siega confirmed this in a new interview with the New York Post, where he had the following to say about the big choice:

“We wanted to keep it ambiguous, not show the person’s face, who it is or what the relationship is. We can choose to answer that a number of ways next year.”

As for why Ryan didn’t kill Joe, the response that Siega had was interesting, mostly in that it was an acknowledgement that maybe Kevin Bacon’s character has an addiction to violence and despair much in the same way that Joe has a constant need to kill and cultivate his legacy:

His whole existence right for the past eight years has been Joe Carroll. Maybe that’s why he doesn’t kill him; maybe it’s not just simply that he’s consciously doing the right thing.”

While season 2 probably could have functioned as a decent finale for the entire series, there are still some threads in between what happened to Mike, and also of course where Mark is going next. This one move cemented a future in the series for Sam Underwood in some form.
