‘Call the Midwife’ season 3, episode 5 preview (PBS): Patsy’s arrival; an emotional story
“Call the Midwife” has so far this season been all about highs and lows, given that there have been plenty of both of them. Last week’s episode may have been the most devastating episode to date, brought on mostly by the sudden, shocking death of Jenny’s new love interest Alec.
His death causes her to be forced to rethink many things and her life, and thanks to the physical and emotional distance that she has from the rest of the women at Nonnatus House, she’s not going to be present for the majority of the episode airing Sunday night. However, we do have from the official synopsis below a few more details when it comes to what to expect, including the arrival of a new character in Patsy who will play a role over the episodes ahead:
“The midwives discover that a young Down Syndrome woman is six months pregnant, leading to difficult confessions and decisions. Dr. Turner suggests that Shelagh take over the running of Nonnatus House to allow an exhausted Sister Julienne to recuperate. Patsy, a new nurse, arrives at Nonnatus House.”
The story of the Down Syndrome woman is going to be the anchor this week, and be assured that it is an emotional story and a further bit of evidence that what “Call the Midwife” really does best is take these sort of emotional stories and find ways to make them transcendent. While you are watching this, you may have a hard time really figuring out whether or not you are watching something that took place in the past, or something that could be happening in present-day. The only thing that really separates the two is technology.
