‘Pretty Little Liars’ season 5: Show creator wants to start movie franchise
Is a “Pretty Little Liars” movie inevitable? While we would not say that just yet, it at least looks like this is something that could be on the horizon for the show once they finish shooting however many seasons that they are doing. We do also understand the appeal in that this is an extremely successful franchise that makes ABC Family a ton of money, and has one of the craziest fan followings out there.
So for creator Marlene King to hype up a possible movie to E! News comes as no surprise to us at all. As a matter of fact, we expect it to happen so long as the ratings don’t teeter off a cliff in the near future:
“That’s always been the ultimate goal, is that it ends its life in one medium and starts another life on film. I love that … Oh we want an in-theaters film! Big, big, big opening weekend, with all those Pretty Little Liars fans are coming out. It would be so much fun. And we’d get to do so much like big stuff too.”
One clear benefit of doing a movie for this show is the opportunity to really fine-tune things and include more crazy stunts and location shoots. This show manages to do just about everything that it can with a TV budget, and the fact that they shoot more than 22 episodes in a year. Given that they don’t film for 12 months consecutively, you are basically only getting a couple of weeks at most to shoot an episode. That’s not much time for a dense 42-44 minutes of television.
Personally, we’d like to see season 5 be the last one for the show (there’s only so long you can keep these people in high school), and then push ahead to movies. That would suit the future format better, given that these characters would start seeing each other less in college. This is one of the few scenarios where we think a switch to the movie format from TV could be a good thing.
