2014 ACM Awards: Blake Shelton, Luke Bryan slam Britney Spears, skewer Carrie Underwood

ACM Awards -There are many memorable moments that come every year during the Academy of Country Music Awards, but to us, one that tends to grab all sorts of headlines is the way in which that the show tends to begin. It’s one part music celebration, but also one part comedy routine.

Blame Blake Shelton for much of this, given that he is the master of silly comedy  while also being an artist at the same time. Ultimately, he and Luke wasted no time at all finding people to make fun of. Blake let loose a pretty harsh slam of Britney Spears it terms of people performing live music.

The Britney slam was pretty harsh, but you can argue that there was another pretty horrible slams of Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Luke in particular said that while the ACM Awards will be celebrating their 50th anniversary at Cowboys Stadium, there are not too many other events celebrated there … including Cowboys playoff games. Carrie Underwood was skewered for her “Sound of Music” success, Blake made a joke about being “Entertainer of the Year” to his wife Miranda Lambert.

Overall, this opening is exactly what you would expect from the show’s two hosts: It’s a little bit rowdy and obnoxious, but fits in perfectly with the target demographic. It touched on subjects such as drugs and same-sex marriage without getting too opinionated, and spent most of its time instead just having lighthearted fun at the expense of others.
