NBC’s ‘Community’ season 5 spoilers: What sandwich shop wants to conquer Greendale?

The last time that Subway had a dalliance with a show airing on NBC, it was for “Chuck” in an effort to keep the show on the air. Over time, the show and fans were so grateful that it practically became another character. So is the relationship between “Community‘ and the sandwich shop going to be anywhere near as friendly? It certainly doesn’t sound like it, at least based on some of the reports that are out there now.

The season finale airing later this month is entitled “Basic Sandwich,” which is a strange title in itself given that “Community” titles are usually based around possible classes … unless of course the meaning of “sandwich” has changed to become a subject matter in addition to something you jam in your mouth. As for what you can expect with this particular story, the short synopsis (via Zap2It) almost suggests that an epic war is going to break out between the Greendale gang and the aforementioend Subway:

“When everyone learns about Greendale’s first dean, they embark on a mission to find his old computer lab; Subway enlists Chang to spy on the group as part of its plan to take over the school.”

Wait, why is Chang being evil again? Well, the easiest explanation for that is that Chang is so much more awesome when he is. The group, regardless of whether they or teachers or students, is always better off when they have an adversary.

The presence of Subway as a potential villain is also interesting here thanks to Shirley’s former status as queen of a sandwich empire. But, we thought her business was falling apart, and it’s hard to know how much skin in the game she has at this point.
