2014 Oscars: John Travolta makes major gaffe, mispronounces Idina Menzel’s name
Here is the irony when it comes to the 2014 Oscars: Host Ellen DeGeneres had to pronounce a number of near-impossible names tonight, but for whatever reason, the person who struggled the most was the one who had to pronounce “Idina Menzel.” Does John Travolta have some sort of inside joke with the “Frozen” star that nobody else knows about?
In what was one of the strangest moments of the night, Travolta, while talking about the important of musical theater and great songs, somehow managed to completely butcher Idina’s name. This was mere seconds before she came out to perform the nominated song “Let It Go” from “Frozen,” which may to this date be one of the most popular Original Song nominees ever. She still completely nailed it, and it’s hard to expect anything less from someone who is considered to be a legend of the stage. That’s the crazy thing about what Travolta did here; it’s not like Menzel is a complete stranger who is new to the stage or anything.
The good news for Menzel? In the end, she has to feel pretty thrilled that “Let It Go” did end up winning the Oscar for Original Song a little later in the night. Thanks to that, we imagine that she will probably be able to … let it go. Sorry, but we had to.
If you want to see this performance, don’t worry: We’ll have it for you here pretty soon. So just be sure to keep coming back to the page for it.
