‘Late Night with Seth Meyers’: Watch the opening monologue now! (video)
On Monday night, “Late Night with Seth Meyers” kicked off in a way that felt very much like other shows … specifically “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.” Paying tribute to the show’s earlier host, Seth started things off by reading a thank-you note to Jimmy for allowing him to take on his former show. This was a nice little callback, and a way to carry into the standard monologue that you see on almost every late-night show these days.
So how was this monologue itself? The best way to describe it is “funny,” but not necessarily hilarious. Seth’s delivery is almost identical to what we saw from him back during his days at “Weekend Update,” and that includes both the good and the bad. The visual aids aren’t there this time, and he comes across as just a little bit distant from the audience and a little rigid. Maybe some of this is due to the simple fact that this is a very different sort of gig for him, and this is something that will improve over time. He was at least cognizant enough to know when some jokes were bombing, and when some jokes were actually sticking.
Later in the show was somewhat more successful, as he eventually brought out his longtime friend and former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Amy Poehler for an interview. She was of course game for just about anything, and she loosened up the show after a somewhat-rigid start. Plus, it just felt so appropriate that she was the first guest.
