‘The Walking Dead’ season 4 devours the Olympics Closing Ceremony
We’ve known for the past few weeks that not even the Olympics could slow down the beast known as “The Walking Dead,” but there was some more evidence of that Sunday night? As a matter of fact, we witnessed what was ultimately the biggest divide to date between the two.
While the Olympics had one of their lowest-rated nights ever (a sign of both fatigue and a game that really did not get Americans too enthused), the AMC series delivered a 6.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic to go along with over 13.1 million viewers. These are only tiny decreases from the week before, and that is expected when you look at some of the past viewing patterns. It tends to slide somewhat during the season, and then rise for every finale and premiere.
The idea of any show getting more than a 6.0 rating in this modern age of TV viewing is astounding, and next week will be one of the larger tests courtesy of the Academy Awards. This is the biggest competitor that the show has year in and year out, given that they deliberately do not air against the Super Bowl and only have standard NFL games to worry about in the fall.
There are still five episodes to go this season, and some great stuff to go along with that now that we have Abraham on the scene. There is some other sort of larger mission at play, and at least something with the illusion of hope. That is something that we feel like the show needs at times.
