‘Sherlock’ season 3 helps BBC iPlayer set record; imagine what season 4 could do

Sherlock season 3As we’ve said a few times on CarterMatt over the past six months, streaming network content over the internet is the way of the future. While there are going to be networks and people who are hesitant to do this, we do still feel that within the next two years, the majority of the networks that you watch on your TV will be available to you on your computer or your phone, at least provided that you have a cable package that can be verified.

Some more evidence of this comes via the continued success of the BBC iPlayer during the month of January. According to a new release from the network, there were over 315 million requests for the radio and TV service last month, and that is the first time that the network has crossed into that territory.

Is “Sherlock” a huge reason why? You better believe it. The show was reportedly particularly popular with the player, and we imagine it could be even more so when the fourth season rolls around.

iPlayer results are cumulative between people viewing channels live, and also those who are using it instead to watch programs that have already aired. The fact that the BBC released any data at all here is surprising, given most major TV networks in the United States are very hesitant to let you know at all anything that is going on with their streaming service providers.

Sadly for “Sherlock” fans, there is no word on when a season 4 could happen … other than just “eventually.” Just settle in for a long wait.
