‘Girls’ season 3, episode 7 review: Elijah returns for a terrible summer night
For the first time practically all season long, “Girls” staged a reunion of sorts Sunday for Jessa, Hannah, Marnie, and Shoshanna as the group headed out to Long Island for what was actually supposed to be a trip stuffed full of summer fun. It was an opportunity for the girls to “heal,” and figure out why there were so many differences that were causing them to fall apart at the seams.
What did we have instead? Basically a half-hour full of tension from start to finish, brought on by some of the reasons why Hannah is so unlikable at times: Her selfishness and refusal to see other viewpoints. Rather than trying to pay any regard for what Marnie had prepared for the trip, she ran into Elijah, and then invited him and all of his friends for some rowdy partying. It was here that we saw his apology tour, and learned that most of his friends are completely awful people.
The saddest part of this whole story? That Elijah is apparently so desperate for love that he will pretend not to be in love so that he is not alone. This is a guy who clearly needs to figure out some things, but cannot really find anyone to help him.
The tension between the main four eventually erupted, when we were reminded of some of the ways in which Marnie has also been a bad friend in being selfish and controlling. Shoshanna started to go off the rails here, and actually said what most of us were thinking.
In a way, what made this episode strong was that even though no one was particularly a good person, that’s what life is sometimes. We’re all a little selfish, even if we never are on this extreme level. Some of the craziness and the one-liners here made up in part for the absence of Ray, who is becoming our favorite on the show by a mile. Grade: B+.
