The White House comments on Jay Leno’s exit from ‘The Tonight Show’
While you may not be a big fan of Jay Leno, there is one thing that you cannot deny at this point: His impact on the history of late-night TV. He has done “The Tonight Show” for more than two decades, and interviewed everyone from famous politicians to celebrities at the height of their careers. Now, he has also gotten an official comment from the White House.
While during his signature press conference, secretary Jay Carney was kind enough to issue a statement about the end of Leno’s reign, which makes a little bit of sense when you consider that the President has appeared on the show a number of times over the years:
“[Obama] is a fan and he has enjoyed his times on the set with Jay Leno … And it’s just the end of an era I think for a lot of folks who have watched him on the Tonight Show over all these years. So the President wishes him well. We all do. And like I said, we’ve enjoyed — I’ve enjoyed being with the President in the times he has been out there. And I know he has enjoyed the experience.”
Will there ever been an interview between the two parties again? That all depends on what comes next for Leno. While he is uncertain if he will ever do another nightly show, his immediate plans are just to go out and continue doing the stand-up circuit … which he has done the entire time he has hosted the show. We’ve heard that there could be interest from CNN, given Jeff Zucker’s ties to Jay.
