‘The Big Bang Theory’ season 7 spoilers: Bob Newhart to return (again) as Professor Proton

More of Bob -Love “The Big Bang Theory,” and love Bob Newhart? Then you will be very pleased to know that Professor Proton is not going anywhere.

After making his second appearance on the sitcom earlier this season as Sheldon’s childhood idol, who ended up working with Leonard on an experiment and making Jim Parsons’ character so jealous that he hired Bill Nye, TVLine reports that Newhart will reprise the role for a third time later this season. There is no word exactly on what he is coming back for just yet, but this should not come as a surprise. Newhart said after he originally signed on for the show that he only wanted to do so if he could recur for a few episodes.

Is this news worth getting excited about? The interesting thing when it comes to Newhart is that this seems to be by and large very dependent on how much you loved him in some of his classic TV work. As someone who did enjoy those programs, we find him very enjoyable and funny here; however, we have also heard from neophytes to Newhart that they find this character to be somewhat depressing and dull. It probably just depends on whether or not you really enjoy his energy, and we do. It brings a different flavor to the show, and he also challenges Sheldon to be something a little bit different. Typically when we see an idol of his on the show, they are only around for a tiny amount of time. The only real exception to that is Wil Wheaton, but he was an archenemy for a pretty good stretch of time.
