Super Bowl commercials: Stephen Colbert, Wonderful Pistachios get innovative

Highlights -Everyone loves Stephen Colbert, right? Well for this latest Super Bowl commercial, the host of “The Colbert Report” makes it clear that he loves Wonderful Pistachios. This is the latest sort of experimental ad that the brand has tried over the past several years, with this one being a series of two 15-second spots rather than a traditional 30-second ad. It was a smart little idea, and one that we are happy that they tried.

You can see the two parts of the ad below, along with our full take on it.

What worked – The biggest thing to us is that we simply enjoyed the sight of Colbert! He is a great spokesman for the company; he more than likely did not come cheap, but at the same time he is worth it. He is very charismatic guy, and we really liked the idea that he legitimately believed that the company was going to see their stocks surged almost instantaneously thanks largely to just one commercial. It didn’t quite happen that way, which caused him in the second ad to be extremely over-the-top and silly.

What didn’t – Nothing really. When you consider that this is Wonderful Pistachios, we can’t really figure out what they would have to be unhappy about here. Everything from the spokesman to the bird felt completely on-brand for them.

Our grade: A. The best Wonderful Pistachios ad that they have ever created for the big game. The last few that they made have, quite frankly, come across as very dumb and over-the-top more so than anything else.
