‘Face Off’ season 6, episode 3 review: A dance with dragons

Face Off -

Tonight’s episode of “Face Off” on Syfy was all sorts of awesome most of the way through, at least when it comes to the subject matter: Dragons. If you have studied the mythology and the history of these creatures in literature, then you know that there is so much more to the world of dragons than ones who just breathe fire. The show embraced that this week, and had some of the coolest creations that we’ve seen in a while.

Then again, from an editing perspective, it was also a very strange episode. A good chunk of the hour was spent watching Chloe spiral and freak out about her design being somehow the worst thing that she has ever seen, and yet she wasn’t even in danger. Meanwhile, the guy who lost in Daniel didn’t seem that nervous at all going into elimination. He had a dragon that was complete and reasonably devoid of errors, but the problem was that it didn’t even look like a dragon. Plus, with that kimono it was wearing, it almost looked somewhat like a confused tourist.

There are a number of these sort of “create and then be judged by fellow creators” shows on TV, but what we do give “Face Off” some more credit for is having judges that we probably agree with more than any other show. They totally made the right choices in the top three, and giving Tyler the win was so deserved. His frozen dragon was absolutely amazing, from the stance of it to the wing design. When watching this show we tend to imagine if we can picture a story for the character in our head, and we really could here. This dragon was almost tailor-made for a video game as you went through a frozen wasteland. While Rashaad didn’t win, his tar dragon was one of the most innovative things that we’ve seen. It looked like a dragon, but also something new and different.

From a critical perspective, this is a show that is hard to criticize too much, since it does so much right when it comes to respecting the artists and making the story about their creations. It all comes down to whether or not you’re into this sort of fantasy makeup design. Luckily, we’re all in when they come up with creatures this cool. Grade: B+.
