‘Supernatural’ season 9, episode 12 review: Garth, werewolves, more in ‘Sharp Teeth’

Qualls -We do dig many a “Supernatural” episode that deviates a little bit from the main story, but to us, it is all about timing. For example, last week we had a pretty outstanding episode in “First Born,” which succeeded in giving us a deeper look into the origins of the show’s version of Cain. Not only that, but it got Crowley a step closer to defeating Abaddon, which is a move in a little bit of the right direction for the Winchesters.

So while we have been curious about what Garth was up to, why now … and why werewolves? Admittedly, part of our problem is just that we have a certain aversion to werewolves on TV and film in the first place. There’s nothing really that interesting about the idea to us, mostly because we don’t see transforming at times against your will to be much of a power. (Maybe that’s the same reason why we don’t care about the Hulk, but we digress.)

Garth had apparently done quite a bit since he last saw Sam and Dean: He got married, settled down, and seemed to be in good shape. Unfortunately for him, being turned into a werewolf was bad news when he learned that this same woman he married was also hardly using his powers for good.

In the end, the final ten minutes of the episode was the best as a remorseful Garth showed a sense of desperation to try to make things right. Both he and Dean held responsibility for what happened when it came to Kevin, and he wanted to try to make up for it by using his new abilities to try and hunt for the Winchesters. Bonus: He got a hug from Dean, and went in before he changed his mind! Hooray!

“Sharp Teeth” in the end was fine, but not fantastic. It didn’t really do that much to get the Winchester brothers on the same page again, but it did at least help the two realize that there was a problem that needs to be addressed … and they’re at least together. We’ll just have to wait and see on that; but for now, this was an episode that probably needed a better story throughout to make it worthwhile beyond the very end. Grade: B-.
