HBO’s ‘Looking’ episode 2 preview: Jonathan Groff and haircut talk
Last week, HBO’s new series “Looking” had a pretty fantastic premiere, as we started to learn a little bit more about Jonathan Groff’s character of Patrick and his attempts to fit in as a gay man in San Francisco.
While you could say that sexuality plays a big part in the show, we really see this more as a show about people simply trying to relate and find common ground with other people. We saw this perfectly in that scene in the first episode, where Patrick, desperate to hide the one thing that made him unappealing to a previous date, pretended to have a job in the medical field rather than one as a game designer.
Is he still keeping this ruse up? That is what we wondered to ourselves while watching this sneak-peek video below, though unfortunately Patrick doesn’t really tilt us in one direction or the other. Instead, we have a conversation all about haircuts, and also the terrible struggle that comes when someone says that “we should get out of here.” What does that really mean? One impulse suggests that they are looking for a much more intimate environment to hang out in; meanwhile, another one suggests that they are merely interested instead in going out somewhere that has a different vibe, or maybe a place that you don’t have to shout so loud to have your voice heard.
Here’s to hoping that the writing and acting stays as strong as it was in the premiere the rest of the way; given that this is HBO, and the show features Groff prominently, we have hope.
