‘Bones’ season 9 spoilers: Sweets becomes a chess master

What's ahead -It was ironically not too long ago that we started to wonder (seriously) when was the last time that we saw chess play a major role in a murder mystery … so apparently, the folks working as writers on “Bones” must be clairvoyant! Despite having a pretty gross name in “The Master in the Slop,” the upcoming January 24 episode is going to feature most of the characters attempting to discover a killer in an unusual place. Not only that, but this could be a Sweets-centric episode in some ways in that he ends up going on an undercover mission into the cerebral and at-times isolating sport.

If you want to read some of the first details courtesy of the Fox promotional department, then take a look at the full synopsis below:

“When the Jeffersonian team discovers the body of a renowned but disliked chess master amidst pig slop, Sweets surprises the team with his chess skills and goes undercover in the world of professional chess to find the killer. Cam is being recognized in the ‘Outstanding Woman of Science’ issue of a noted science publication but is hesitant to participate since she does not want to offend Brennan who knows she should be the one to be honored. Meanwhile, much to Brennan’s annoyance, Dr. Douglas Filmore (guest star Scott Lowell), the always sunny Canadian forensic podiatrist, fills in as a lab intern.”

There are some episodes of “Bones” that you get a sense going in that it is going to be somewhat emotional … but you really don’t get that at all going into this one. Instead, the feeling that we have is more along the lines that this could just be a fun one that explores different layers to characters that we did not know were there beforehand. We imagine that for some of the bigger stories, they may want to wait until the February sweeps begin the following week.
