ABC’s ‘Scandal’ season 3 spoilers: Kerry Washington on common ground for Olivia, Rowan
There have been quite a few surprises already on “Scandal” season 3, and many of them led to what was the big reveal of the fall season Thursday night: The revelation that Olivia’s mother, now a much more dangerous woman than first envisioned, is back in America with a mission at the White House. Not only that, but you have Rowan no longer in his position of power at B6-13. This means that for the first time ever on the show, he is vulnerable, and it could change the relationship between he and his daughter rather sharply.
But is it possible that we could ever see Rowan actually working with his daughter Olivia Pope in some capacity? When you think about it, he does definitely have the skills needed to be a Gladiator in that he’s smart, well-informed, and extremely ruthless. However, Kerry Washington speculates to The Hollywood Reporter that there could be a certain amount of pride, or some sort of feelings of pain brought on by his past with Olivia’s mother, that could keep him from ever opening up and being a true asset:
“I don’t know. I think he’s been so hurt by his wife, and you wonder if he’s holding some of that against his adult female child. There are clearly boundaries in the way of their relationship, and he’s just not able to be vulnerable, honest and open with her.”
Washington is not really able to confirm or deny anything just yet about the future of the show, but says that she learned the shocker about Olivia’s mother no earlier than the rest of the cast when she read about it in the script. As an actor, that has to be somewhat effective in that you are fully immersed in the character’s world, and you don’t think twice about anything that they are ultimately going through.
