NBC’s ‘The Voice’ results: Did James Wolpert, Matthew Schuler, Will Champlin make top 5?
For the first time since the start of “The Voice’s” live shows this season, we had a result show with only one elimination. By most intensive purposes, this was great news. We have possibly the best top 6 of any singing competition in years; while some artists are better than others, there is no dud of the bunch. Heck, the guy getting the most criticism as of late in Matthew Schuler has the best-selling single of the entire competition in “Hallelujah.”
Going into tonight’s episode, we felt like the decision as to who to eliminate would be between Matthew and James Wolpert, with fringe possibilities being either Jacquie Lee or Will Champlin. Well, one of these possibilities was eliminated early, as Jacquie and Cole Vosbury (the likely favorite right now to win thanks to iTunes sales) were both declared safe. Tessanne Chin quickly followed, and that left us with the much-predicted trio that we mentioned earlier in this article. The not-so-awesome thing about this is that if Will is forced to rely on Twitter, he could be screwed. Why? He lives in California, and West Coast viewers are not watching the show yet.
Luckily, we were spared that controversial moment with a bottom two that was James and Matthew, which left the voting public / the state of Pennsylvania quite a tough decision. Both of these guys have ties there, and they have both been great. Personally, we leaned towards James mostly because he’s at least performed more interesting songs as of late, while Matthew has been fading.
This was tough, but James lives to see another day, and Adam Levine surprisingly still has more people left than the other three coaches do combined. Strangely, we still feel like someone not on his team will win this season. Grade: B.
Do you think that the right person went home tonight, and are you excited about the top 5 in the same way that Blake Shelton gets excited about drinking? Share below! We’ll have full rankings of the top 5 of the weekend, so come back to CarterMatt for more on that.

It’s a close race going into next week. My power rankings (based on iTunes and actual vote results over time, and NOT on my personal favorites) suggests that the Top 5 (in order) is: 1. Cole 2. Tessanne 3. Will 4. Jacquie and 5. James. The gap between them is very small, and no one is a runaway favorite. It’s entirely possible that any artist could move way up (or way down) based on their song choices on Monday.

Little wonder that Blake has won this competition multiple times…he has a built-in advantage. Country music permeates the American musical psyche…don’t know why…it just does. Idol has had (adnauseamly) more than their share of country winners – a country artist won both the Voice and X-factor last year and Restless Road (a horrible trio) and Cole Vosbury could very well win this year. Here’s a desperate idea: Why don’t the big 4 reality shows get together and produce a Supershow for the world of country music. The winner would be a Super winner? Then, produce the regular shows for all the other genres. If they’ll do it, I’ll even promise to watch the supershow. And that’s quite a commitment! By the way, Will should win.

For the sake of the show, I don’t want Team Blake to win. While Cole is good, his stage presence is a tad boring as he barely moves and just stands there. Want him to be eliminated next week, clearing the way for someone else.

I hope you are wrong because Tessanne is fantastic.
