‘Supernatural’ season 9, episode 7 review: Did we just see Dean’s first kiss?

Take a look -Supernatural” has brought us some flashback episodes over the years, but what made “Bad Boys” to us particularly endearing was that it allowed us to see a time in Dean Winchester’s life that we did not even know existed previously. This included getting the opportunity to watch Dean get his first kiss many years ago while staying at a reform school of sorts, and how he ended up abandoning the girl who loved him due to what can be best referred to as “extenuating circumstances.”

But why didn’t Dean ever tell Sam about this? That, to us, was the only gaping hole in the episode in that it didn’t feel like something that really needed to be kept a secret for a long period of time. It’s not like Dean’s father is going to be overtly disappointed with him at this point, and it may be the sort of thing that causes Jared Padalecki’s character to doubt almost everything else that Dean tells him … which isn’t good, when you think about Ezekiel.

While this was a standalone episode, we admit to getting slightly choked up after seeing the real reason for Dean being called back to the old “school”: Helping a young boy in Timmy whose mother wasn’t willing to let go of him. Thanks to that, she was inflicting all sorts of terrible damage and hurting people. Seeing the kid finally tell his mother to leave was somewhat heartwrenching, and it is an emotion that the Winchesters can relate to.

In the end, we saw Sam and Dean say goodbye to the place that was once Dean’s refuge, and we learned that it was his father that took him away from it. While we think that he really did want to stay there and live out the rest of his childhood, he did the one thing that he’s done a lot of recently to Sam when asked about why he wanted to leave: He lied. Grade: B+.
