‘How I Met Your Mother’ season 9 spoilers: James Van Der Beek stages return as Robin’s ex
Who is the latest guest star coming on board “How I Met Your Mother’s” ninth and final season? It’s someone who we know very well already: James Van Der Beek, who plays the part of Robin’s ex-boyfriend Simon. The actor, who also has a role on the upcoming CBS comedy “Friends With Better Lives” (a likely Monday fill-in next year after our beloved sitcom), confirmed the news today via social media. Not only that, but he also seemed to confirm that the 12th episode of the season, entitled “Bedtime Stories,” will feature him.
So now, we just have to wonder why in the world we’re seeing more of Simon. One obvious explanation would just be that he is one of the guests invited to the wedding of Barney and Robin. While it may be somewhat weird for Robin to ask her ex to show up, we’ve seen stranger things happen on this show (and at real weddings).
Also, with the abundance of flashbacks on this series, it’s far from a longshot that James could just be one of the people appearing in Robin’s past as we start to find out more and more about how she operates in relationships. Regardless, it’s a nice little callback to a certain time in her life, and James is the sort of constantly-funny guy that you want to have aboard your show. He joins an immense cast of guest stars this year including the likes of John Lithgow, Frances Conroy, Wayne Brady, Sherri Shepherd, a still-unnamed big star from the world of music, and many more. The only names out there that we are still hoping to see appear are Ashley Benson and Lucy Hale, who play relatives of Barney and Robin. They have been busy as of late with “Pretty Little Liars,” but they will have a little bit of time off early next year.
Of course, also expect many more appearances from Cristin Milioti, because even though her role has been limited so far, it will increase as more and more people get to meet her.
