Next week, “Hell on Wheels” will end season 3 with an episode entitled “Get Behind the Mule,” and it is one that is hopefully going to answer every question that we want to learn in the event that this marks the end of the road for the show. AMC has not announced whether or not there will be a season 4, though we personally believe the odds are favorable since this show draws better numbers than “The Killing” did, and it certainly performs better than “Low Winter Sun” without having the enormous “Breaking Bad” lead-in to offer up some sort of support.
The one story that we can promise will be addressed substantially in this episode? The questions surrounding whether or not Cullen Bohannon is really going to be making it out of here dead or alive. Based on the sneak peek video below, it’s not looking great for him. He has been brought before quite possibly the most terrifying priest ever, and thus begins what appears to be a proceeding leading somewhat to his doom.
“Cullen deals with consequences; Elam mounts a rescue attempt; Durant receives the U.P. board ahead of the deadline.”
If we were the writers of the series, what we would do is pretty simple, since at this point you know that you don’t want to see the series end: Resolve the story surrounding Cullen’s capture, but then create another cliffhanger that is so vast, it is like a dare for AMC to bring the show back. While we realize that this cannot be cheap to film given the elaborate sets, there is so much more of a story here to tell.
