‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 5 spoilers: Ian Somerhalder on state of Damon’s happiness
When “The Vampire Diaries” season 5 picks up on The CW come Thursday, October 3 on The CW, Damon Salvatore is going to be in a little bit of a different place than he has been in the past. Namely, we’re speaking about this from the perspective of one simple thing: He’s finally “got the girl” that he has been pursuing for all of this time.
But when you finally do achieve something that you have been long hoping for, there is inevitably going to be an important question that rises out of it: What comes next? Are you really going to stay happy forever? That is a very difficult question to answer. This is Mystic Falls, and Ian Somerhalder says in the video below that this alone is basically a guarantee that there is something bad that is going to happen to the two of them. Damon’s a guy that is confident in some ways, and insecure in others. He hasn’t been in a real relationship in what is probably decades, and he has to figure out just what it means to look out for someone other than just himself.
Meanwhile, Somerhalder also teases in the video a little bit about how the show is going to move forward from everything that has transpired last year, and how he prefers to look at the story in terms of the writing rather than any one particular arc or in terms of his character.
For Damon, we imagine the biggest challenge for this year being simple: Being okay to let go of Elena on the occasions where she does want to spread her wings a little bit, and know that she will come back to him. There’s also that issue of honesty, given that another character played by Nina Dobrev will have spent some of the summer living with him. There could also be an issue of jealousy that comes up, but only because Elena finds herself a male friend to talk to. It’s not a love interest, but he could still see it as a threat.
