‘Dexter’ season 8, episode 3 review: Did Deb confess to killing LaGuerta?

Last week on “Dexter” season 8, we had a chance to see some major movement with the strengthening of the Evelyn Vogel / Dexter bond, which has become one of the more interesting partnerships that the show has ever seen. However, we also had the further deterioration of Deb, and this continued this week with her near-arrest for DUI.

As a matter of fact, this arrest would have happened were it not for Quinn, who once again proved that he clearly still has feelings for her by showing up to bail her out. In doing so, he further damaged his relationship with Jamie, and also simultaneously hurt himself when it comes to his odds at getting the promotion to Sargent.

In continuing the story of the Brain Surgeon, Dexter and Vogel tried to narrow down their list of possible candidates. Dexter tracked one of them down rather efficiently, but the problem there was that this guy was a different sort of psychopath … a cannibal. This man did end up getting on Dexter’s table, which made him one of the first interesting table kills of the entire season. (There hasn’t been one of these in quite a while.)

While all of this was compelling television, nothing was more stunning the Deb’s attempt to confessing to LaGuerta’s death by showing up to Miami Metro and making an official statement. The problem? She, once again, was drunk out of her mind, and if it wasn’t for Quinn deciding that he was just going to humor her delirious confession, she would be in some serious trouble. Vogel then saved the day, carting Deb off with Dexter to give her some help for the “guilt” that she is experiencing.

Overall, we do have to say that this was a heck of a solid “Dexter” episode. It wasn’t perfect, though, as that may be in part due to the show not really shocking us with anything beyond the confession (which was like a tease that didn’t go anywhere). Things are still building here, and it could be time before we see the end results.
