‘Under the Dome’: Stephen King defends CBS show, deviations from book
There seems to be two camps of people right now when it comes to the CBS series “Under the Dome”: Those who absolutely loved the show and appreciated it for what it was, and then those diehard book fans who were so upset about some of the major changes that were made just in the pilot episode alone. You have to figure that if there are this many alterations to the story this early, there will definitely be more later … even to the point where some out there start to question whether or not this is really the same story or not.
Well, we do have an answer now for those of who are on the verge of insanity trying to figure out whether or not this new version of the story will be different. The answer is a very clear “yes,” and this is actually something that Stephen King not only endorses, but is excited to see play out. In an open letter to fans, the famed author referred to the two works as almost “fraternal twins,” and offered up the following statement:
“If you loved the book when you first read it, it’s still there for your perusal. But that doesn’t mean the TV series is bad, because it’s not. In fact, it’s very good…Many of the changes wrought by Brian K. Vaughan and his team of writers have been of necessity, and I approved of them wholeheartedly.”
One reason that many changes are a necessity? Because this show is open-ended, whereas the book is not. Vaughan as showrunner needs to give himself some room for a second season to happen, which we figure it probably will, given some of the incredible ratings that we saw for the premiere.
