‘American Idol’ notes: Jessica Sanchez, Candice Glover book Memorial Day event
For TV fans, Memorial Day is hardly an earth shattering time of year. It’s typically a time when people are either outside eating barbecue or spending time with friends, and most networks are afraid to air anything that is remotely new programming in the process.
Luckily, PBS is bucking the trend somewhat for “American Idol” fans, though we must also submit that one of their primary reasons for this is merely that they are broadcasting a Memorial Day-themed concert event. The event will take place on the West Lawn at the Capitol in Washington DC beginning Sunday at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time, and will run straight through to 9:30. Not only will Jessica Sanchez be returning to this event for the second straight year, but she will be joined by someone else who has a substantial “American Idol” fan-base now all her own: Candice Glover. It’s not entirely clear as of this writing what the show’s reigning champion will sing, but it’s a heck of a way to get attention from people who did not watch her season.
The lineup this year is pretty darn impressive for all reality TV fans, given that Chris Mann of “The Voice” and classic singer / former “Dancing with the Stars” contestant Katherine Jenkins have each also been booked to perform. There will be an audience of hundreds of thousands present tomorrow night, along with millions at home for an event honoring servicemen and women.
As for what else you can check out this Memorial Day Weekend, the real answer here is marathons, at least until the holiday itself brings back “The Voice,” and also the return of “The Bachelorette” to TV for the first time since Emily Maynard’s season came to an end.
