‘Saturday Night Live’: Bill Hader talks leaving, possibility of Stefon movie
Tonight is in some ways going to be a sad “Saturday Night Live,” and not just because it is the last one of the season. Rather, this is going to be the last bow for Bill Hader, who has become in many ways a staple of the NBC program. He’s a master-impressionist who consistently delivered with great characters. Not only that, but he also has a man who is widely thought of as the best character on the show these days in “City Correspondent” Stefon.
So is it possible that Hader could actually try to do what so many other cast members have done before, and try to create a whole movie about clubs that have “everything”? Don’t count on it, so breathe in a heavy sigh of relief. Hader spoke on the subject to GQ, and thankfully dismissed an idea that would have likely sent the character straight down into comedy hell with MacGruber:
“There’s no emotional through line … Sometimes people say to me, ‘I want a Stefon movie,’ and I’m like, ‘You think you want a Stefon movie, but then you’ll see the poster for it and think: ‘Wait, I don’t want this.'”
Hader also says that he plans to “sleep” and move to Los Angeles in the months ahead, and he also is not sure that he will keep doing impressions, even if so many of them contributed to him getting a Primetime Emmy Nomination last year for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
We would be absolutely stunned if the finale goes by without an appearance from Stefon, mostly because he did another notable impression in James Carville recently, and who knows how long it will be before the character comes back? You have to leave the show making people want more, and it could benefit him to wait at least a year before coming back to host.
How much are you going to miss Hader, and do you think the show will be able to come up with something to replace him? There are some pretty great “SNL” bloopers below, and you can also watch a preview for Saturday’s finale over at the link here.
