‘Game of Thrones’ season 3: Showrunners on Jaime Lannister [spoiler]
Let’s start this “Game of Thrones” article off with an appropriate warning: if you have yet to see the episode that aired on Sunday night, it’s really in your best interest to stop reading now. Otherwise, be prepared to feel extremely spoiled in a very short amount of time.
In the video below, co-showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss each go in-depth on what was a very important moment for the show, as we have effectively seen a character stripped of their entire identity. Jaime Lannister was known as the Kingslayer, the most powerful knight in Westeros and a young prodigy with a sword. Now, he is little more than a Lannister with one hand. Everything that gave him his swagger is gone, and with this moment, Weiss and Benioff claim that Jaime’s life will never be the same.
Can he survive the rest of the season? It’s definitely possible, but he is going to have to rely on more than just his supreme fighting skills and the fact that his father Tywin is so powerful.
In going back to the Lannisters at King’s Landing, there is also some explanation here for what was also a particularly entertaining scene: the arrival of all of the various advisers to Tywin’s conference. Benioff and Weiss explain the significance of how sitting close to Tywin is viewed as a sign of knowledge or importance; while some people (Littlefinger, Cersei) value it deeply, others (Tyrion) choose to sit as far away as possible as to more or less metaphorically spit on his face.
