‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 4 spoilers: Joseph Morgan on Klaus’ possible redemption
Could there be a way for Klaus to ever really turn his life around? This is certainly not going to be easy. For the past few years on “The Vampire Diaries,” he has done such nasty things as murder Aunt Jenna and Tyler Lockwood’s mother, and yet somehow he is a character that many people like and are fascinated by. Not only that, but there is a genuine contingent of people out there hoping to see Caroline end up with the guy!
But are we going to see a true redemption story when it comes to the character soon? That is a difficult question, and one that does not really carry with it an easy response. Klaus is someone who seems to have moments where there is so good within him, but these are often canceled out by the moments in which we witness him doing something truly terrible. You want to believe he can change, but you’re not even sure that he wants to.
In a new interview with FearNet, this dichotomy is something that Joseph Morgan talks about, especially in the context of how we are supposedly going to be seeing a series soon in “The Originals” that focuses on him front and center, a rare move considering that his character is often regarded as a sort of “Big Bad”:
“It would be nice if The Originals go to series, if it’s ultimately the story of Klaus’ redemption. But I wonder if anyone will really, truly forget about Aunt Jenna (Sara Canning) and the other people Klaus has put in the ground. He has a thousand years of murdering and doing what he wants to get his way. I wonder how quickly you can be redeemed for that. And redemption in whose eyes? I would like to think it is possible for him, but it’s going to take a little work.”
As for Caroline, Morgan says that Klaus genuinely wants to believe that he is capable of loving someone like her, but it is still to be seen whether or not it will actually work as anything beyond infatuation.

I watch Vampire Diaries because I like the chemistry between Klaus and Caroline, and Bonnie and Stefan. I think the writers should give these a couples a chance at romance. I think they should bring Jeremy back too.

At first when Klaus was finally introduced in the television series I was disappointed. He wasn’t what I was expecting and I thought the whole “Klaus as Alaric” thing was stupid, but now through Klaus we have seen so much. He is one of the only characters that still can get an emotional response from me. I’m pretty much numb to the elena/damon/stefan triangle. It was just teetered a little too much for me and I completely lost interest. I now watch the show to see what happens between caroline and klaus. It’s so bittersweet. Morgan has given us so much with this character. He’s the only ‘bad guy’ that has really come across and sadistic, unmerciful and unrelentingly evil throughout the entire series, even compared to Damon at his worst. My heart aches for Klaus some days, and I just want to white oak steak him myself on others and I really don’t think I ever want this to end because it is the tragedy of this character that keeps me coming back for more. He wants so badly to be like everyone else especially because he is so unique in species, but he is insecure and scared of mortality and humanism at the same time. If Klaus became the newest member of the good-guy-gang-of-supernatural-people-stuff it would kill a huge part of his appeal and he will just be another squishy damon type. I have a feeling he will be a tragic hero and in the end meet his demise while saving Caroline and possibly the whole world. Very much like Spike in Buffy. Except leagues more evil than Spike it will be the ultimate redemption.
