‘How I Met Your Mother’ season 8 finale spoilers: Now with a ‘Happy Endings’ star

Do we finally know who is the mother on “How I Met Your Mother”? Not exactly, but we have at least learned the names of two actors who are going to be stopping by the hit CBS sitcom for the upcoming season 8 finale this May. Based on what we’re hearing, their roles are going to be more used for interaction with Barney and Robin.

Remember how we told you that Cobie Smulders and Neil Patrick Harris’ characters are going to get into some sort of couples’ contest with another pair at a restaurant? Well, Vulture has confirmed that this couple will by played by Casey Wilson (“Happy Endings”) along with Keegan-Michael Key (“Key & Peele”). It’s nice to see that Wilson is getting some love on another show, though it sadly does not really soften the blow that “Happy Endings” is almost sure to be canceled by ABC at this point.

So is it possible that Wilson ends up being the mother? It’s nice to think so, but if you remember, we already met the man she is currently dating via the dream sequences in “Time Travelers” this past week. Then again, you could argue that this is just a manifestation of what this man looks like since it’s possible that Ted never actually met the guy at all … but that seems a little bit more complicated than this show really needs to be.

We ultimately still don’t know if the finale is actually going to get to the wedding at all, but whatever happens during this episode will set the stage for what executive producers Carter Bays and Craig Thomas are referring to as an exciting change that could feel very different from the show we’ve come to know and appreciate.
