‘Pretty Little Liars’ season 4 spoilers: Keegan Allen on Spencer, Toby’s future

Are there some big things coming up for Spencer and Toby on “Pretty Little Liars,” and it all stems for what was a pretty surprising revelation during the season 3 finale: even though he joined the “A Team,”  the character is actually still working with the best intentions for his girlfriend and his friends … or is he?

As it turns out, it may be a little more complicated than that. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter following the finale, Keegan Allen explained that when it comes to whether or not Toby is really over his time on the dark side, you really can’t be sure just yet:

“You just don’t know with the show where it’s going to go and what’s going to happen. Upon reading the first two scripts of season four, it’s surprising. The season is going to be potent with new storylines and aggressively getting to the bottom of who is in charge and why this is happening to these girls and why they keep allowing this to happen. [Whether Toby is not on the “A” team] will be explored in season four. There are a whole bunch of reasons why that happened, obviously to protect Spencer like he said, but he has a whole layer of haunted issues that make up who he’s always been. It’s not that we’ve forgotten it, it’s been pushed aside a lot, but now it’s [not].”

Allen also said that he was surprised to learn that Toby was still working for the good team at all in the finale, especially after it initially appeared as though the character would be dead earlier this season.
