‘Pretty Little Liars’ season 3, episode 22 preview: Missy Franklin and finding Spencer

And the award for most random celebrity cameo ever goes to … Missy Franklin? It certainly sounds strange, but the Olympic swimmer is going to be making an appearance on Tuesday night’s new episode of “Pretty Little Liars,” where she is introduced to Emily by none other than Shana (who is clearly still out to prove that she is not trying to steal Paige away from her).

So why are these two even meeting? The connection really just seems to be as simple as this: Emily is a swimmer, and Missy is probably the most-famous female swimmer in America. Therefore, a meeting just made sense. This is Franklin’s first real opportunity to have an acting gig on a major series, and ABC Family just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to place her in an episode. Of course, there’s really no relevance here to anything save for Shana trying to prove she is a good person (which we know she may not be based on some of what she was up to during “Pretty Dirty Secrets”).

While Emily is meeting one of her personal heroes, the rest of the story is going to shift over to what is going on with Spencer Hastings. For the first time in a long time, the Liars are not completely lying when it comes to authority figures: while they know that Emily was troubled, they do not know that Toby is dead or that she had a meltdown in the woods that led to her being locked up in Radley.

As for Spencer, she was able to at least wait a few hours before anyone figured out just who she was, and as she explained to Dr. Sullivan, this was a deliberate move so that she could actually have a few minutes to not be trapped insider her own head.

Ultimately, we do have a feeling that Toby may somehow be alive out there, and this was just part of a plan to break Spencer more than she could ever be broken. Then, all the “A Team” has to do is focus on the other girls.
