‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 4 spoilers: The saddest Elena picture ever?

There are some majorly tough times ahead on “The Vampire Diaries” season 4 for just about every character; but if your name is Elena Gilbert, the best word to describe you may simply just be “confused.” You’ve been told by the character you have a deep (possibly sire-bonidsh) attachment to in Damon to flip off your humanity, and yet everywhere around you there are constant reminders of just what you lost.

The latest example comes in the photo to the left from the show’s March 14 return “Bring It On,” as Elena has to torment herself with a memorial service being held for her later brother. She was able to make it appear to some of the other residents of Mystic Falls as though he died in a fire, but what we are most curious about now is just how they are all going to react to her. Is Elena the town’s new tragic figure, a different sort of person to wear a scarlet letter? You look back at the trail of bodies that she has left, and it’s not a pretty one: you have her adopted parents, John, Jenna, Alaric, and now Jeremy. She’s not deliberately wishing harm on any of them, and yet they are gone regardless.

We know that Elena is not going to spend too much time mourning the loss of Jeremy, mostly because she also spends at least some time during this episode having a little bit of vampire indulgence, including joining the cheerleading squad again only to feast on a few members. It really makes the title for this episode rather ironic, doesn’t it?
