Jessica Simpson going from ‘Fashion Star’ to sitcom star at NBC … maybe
What is it with NBC giving so many of their reality TV mentors at the moment pilot deals? First, we heard the news that Cee Lo Green was going to start work on a comedy project based loosely on his own life; and now, Jessica Simpson is planning to do something similar, expect have it more or less be her life.
According to Deadline, Simpson has secured a deal to give a pilot presentation to the network for a show that basically makes her into the blonde, female version of Larry David, as she will be playing a more comedic version of herself (which would have to be a riot considering that she was unintentionally funny enough on “Newlyweds”). Simpsons had the following to say about this idea, which would be for the 2013-14 season, in a statement:
“I often find myself thinking that no one could ever make up the things that actually happen in my life — so between the real life elements and a great team of writers, I think we’ll have people laughing!”
While it’s great that Simpson is finding to time to handle this pilot, “Fashion Star” season 2, and pregnancy, there are still some pretty obvious problems that we see with this idea:
1. Simpson’s comedy tack record (“The Dukes of Hazzard,” “Employee of the Month”) is not very good, even if she was okay on “That 70’s Show.”
2. With her second child with Eric Johnson due in late spring, she’s not going to have much of a maternity leave in here if NBC orders the show for the fall. (With that, they’d probably schedule it in midseason.)
4. Would they really order both Green and Simpson’s shows?
Ultimately, we see this as a long shot given that “Fashion Star” is hardly lighting up the ratings charts, whereas at least Cee Lo can say that “The Voice” is a hit.
