‘Glee’ season 4 spoilers: Melissa Benoist weighs in on Marley’s eating disorder
Melissa Benoist wasn’t sure what Ryan Murphy had in mind for her character of Marley Rose when she first signed up for “Glee” season 4, but she found out rather quickly (during her first week of work) that Marley’s storyline was going to take a dark and disturbing turn.
In a new interview with TV Guide Benoist spoke about when she first found out that Marley was going to have an eating disorder and said that as an actor she was excited to take on a part with that much depth to it. She said:
“[Ryan Murphy] said, ‘I’m really thinking about Marley having an eating disorder and dealing with bulimia. It definitely was a daunting thing to hear, but in the best way. As an actor, you can only hope for something with that much depth and something to dig into that much.”
Now Marley has collapsed at Sectionals and everyone is aware that there is a problem, but Benoist said she knew something drastic was going to have to happen to get her back on the right track. She said:
“I knew that something drastic needed to happen to knock some sense into Marley or to make her realize that what she was doing was extremely damaging to her psyche and to her physical well-being.”
The good thing about Marley’s storyline from here on out is that it will be a lot more positive and light as she gets support from her mom and friends at school to help her get to a better place emotionally and physically.
The next new episode of “Glee” called “Swan Song” will be airing tonight at 9 p.m. on Fox, but if you can’t wait until tonight and want a bit of a sneak peek you can check out our story here.
