Once Upon a Time season 7 spoilers: More on Rumpelstiltskin’s alter ego

Rumpelstiltskin's alter ego

While the producers of Once Upon a Time have spoken at length on many things, Rumpelstiltskin’s alter ego is still a mystery.

In Storybrooke, we learned that despite being known as “Mr. Gold,” he wasn’t really an alternate personality so much as just Rumple playing possum on the Evil Queen and everyone else. Could the same be said here? It’s possible, given that this guy manages to always be one step ahead. One of the major things that we do known is that he will be around the new neighborhood of Hyperion Heights, and he will have an identity that is both similar and different.

However, you shouldn’t expect to learn Rumpelstiltskin’s alter ego at any point before the premiere, judging from what executive producer Edward Kitsis had to say to The Hollywood Reporter:

“A lot of that we do want to try to preserve as a surprise. Needless to say, he is someone who has his fingers in a lot of pies, who’s connected to many of the stories in ways that are very Rumple-like. He’s an intimidating figure.”

The “intimidating figure” could very well be anyone from a politician to a judge to a career criminal leading a gang. There are a lot of different avenues that the show could explore, and any of these would leave the character fairly well-connected to almost everyone around him. No matter what he knows or doesn’t know, Rumple is still dangerous, and what’s so interesting about this season is that he could end up damaging both fairy-tale characters and regular people at the same time. Kitsis expands on this with the following:

“Unlike Storybrooke, which was separate and just fairy-tale characters, the idea was to be in a world where there would be regular people like us mixing in and intermingling with the fairy-tale characters. They’ll be some element for the audience of who is who, and will they or won’t they figure out who they are?”

By and large, it feels as though most of the new major characters who are being brought in now have some sort of fairy-tale connection, but that shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. Just remember for a moment here that this is a show that loves to reinforce these stories, even if some of them are the same story from past seasons being told in different ways. This, at least to us, is going to be the show’s biggest challenge: Trying to differentiate season 7 from season 1, and getting the necessarily amount of people invested in what is going on in the right amount of time.
