Doctor Who season 11: Clear plan in place for Jodie Whittaker

With Doctor Who season 11 premiering presumably as early as next year, there’s a good bit to be excited about — especially with the plan for Jodie Whittaker being so clear. When she was hired for the new role as the title character, there were apparently plans in place to have her be very much a strong, fascinating character — the powers that be at the series clearly knew that casting her was a risk, but it was one that they were happy and excited to take based on both the performance and the material that they’d seen to date.

In speaking a little bit further on this subject (per the Daily Express) while at the Edinburgh TV Festival recently, show executive producer Piers Wenger had the following to say:

“Chris [Chibnall] had a very clear sense of where he wants to take the show and the sort of qualities he was looking for in his Doctor and Jodie fitted that.

“She read for the part, she auditioned and came back a few times and had a very clear sense of the point of having a female doctor and what she wanted to do with that role. It will be unexpected.”

There is no reason to believe why Whittaker as The Doctor will be nothing short of fantastic, given that the writers and producers seem to be following one of the most specific rules that they can: Focus on the strong vision and shoot from the creative hip. Typically, the ideas that fall apart are the ones created by committee with little to no passion in mind. We don’t get the case that this is what happened here at all. You’ve got a franchise that is well over fifty years old, and with that it makes some sense that you would need to come up with an idea that is very much different and exciting.

With Jodie Whittaker, the show is bringing that to the table, reinventing the brand while also still apparently keeping some familiar elements. We’ve already reported on some of the current plans for a Companion, and beyond that we imagine that many of the show’s familiar faces, including some of The Doctor’s most-notorious adversaries, are going to be back in some shape or form, as well.

We’ll get our first taste of Whittaker in the role starting with the upcoming Christmas Special. Hopefully, that goes sensationally, and will prove to be very much a strong foundation for what is to come.
