Chicago PD season 5: Sophia Bush return not happening in near future

Sophia Bush

While it’s still up in the air as to whether or not Sophia Bush will ever appear on Chicago PD again in the future, one thing seems clear: You won’t be seeing her in the opening episodes of season 5.

At one point, there were talks that maybe Bush would reprise her role of Erin Lindsay in order to properly wrap up her extensive arc on the show. Unfortunately, since that time some of the talk has faded away. There isn’t too much more that can be said about this, beyond what showrunner Rick Eid noted recently to The Hollywood Reporter when asked as to whether or not she could come back:

“It’s probably too early. There’s nothing specific on the table right now so I don’t really have a comment on that right now.”

You obviously never say never to the notion of her returning down the road, but it’s not an immediate priority and despite being active on social media, Bush has never publicly discussed her exit. Dick Wolf said earlier this summer at the TCA Summer Press Tour that she wanted to leave, and it’s best to just leave it at that. If she wants to address it she can, but beyond that, we just have to face the fact that she’s gone from the show and everyone else on the show, both the actors as well as the characters, are going to have to do their best in order to move forward. Obviously, we understand why there is so much buzz surrounding the departure of the character, given that we’re speaking about the show losing someone who is a huge part of the story after only four years. In this era where there are so many actors who sign lengthy deals when the start out on a show, it’s unusual to see a shakeup happen this early on.

One of the things that is going to help with Chicago PD is that there’s probably not going to be a lot of time for the series to really dwell on anything that has happened, given the fact that in the opening episodes you’ll see some more of the struggles that Intelligence is up against. They work in law enforcement in the midst of one of the most dangerous cities in the world. In other words, it’s almost a complete no-brainer that things are going to be chaotic for them.

Remember that new episodes of Chicago PD are going to air starting this fall on NBC. The timeslot is looking to be very much the same: Wednesday nights at 10:00 p.m. Eastern.

For the record…

We’ve also got an interview coming up with Eid that will run leading up to the premiere. In it, we discuss more some of the themes and storylines for the coming season and less in terms of specifics with Bush or the Lindsay character.
