Doctor Who season 11: How Jodie Whittaker had to fight for role

Jodie Whittaker is the new face of Doctor Who heading into season 11, but what may surprise many people out there is just how difficult it was for her to land the part.

We think that there are some people out there with the assumption that she had an easy time snagging it, mostly because of the fact that she worked previously with new showrunner Chris Chibnall on Broadchurch and the two parties were probably very aware of what they planned on doing in terms of her getting the role.

However, that way of thinking turned out to not be the case at all. Speaking per the Mirror, she described precisely everything that went into getting the part, from first talking with Chibnall about it to making sure all of the interested parties were on board:

“There was this long process, as it should be. They needed to make sure I was right for the part. You have to put yourself in a position where you are going to fight for a role like this, because the fans are owed that. You want someone who is fighting for it is such an honour. You can’t just be blasé. Also I think I am a good actor but I might not be that good. so I might have absolutely fluffed my audition. And you cannot predict that.

“Chris knows me and knows I can do certain things but he also knows me as a Beth Latimer so he needed to be able to see there were different sides and that I can draw on that … And so there were auditions and I found out I got it in March.”

Whittaker also credited her work on Broadchurch for being able to keep this secret for the better part of the past several months, mostly because of the fact that this was a show that had a number of huge secrets that it had to keep from most of the show’s fans.

The biggest surprise that obviously comes out of this is that Jodie knew of her casting months before anyone would have assumed, but somehow she and everyone involved managed to keep it under wraps. She did comment in the interview that she didn’t even tell her father that she got the gig, mostly out of her own fear that he would accidentally end up spilling the beans on her casting.

Filming for season 10 has not officially begun just yet; as a matter of fact, there is still some other work to be done in terms of finding a Companion and some other actors to inhabit much of this new world.
