Grey’s Anatomy season 13: Stefania Spampinato playing DeLuca’s sister

It was first reported recently that Grey’s Anatomy season 13 would be adding Andrew DeLuca’s sister for a major role on the show. Now, we know that Stefania Spampinato will be playing that role.

According to a new report coming in right now from Entertainment Weekly, the Italian actress is going to be appearing in multiple episodes as Carina DeLuca, a brilliant doctor from overseas who has her own unique skill set. This should prove to be an asset in so many ways in the house, but it also will have some of its own limitations and cause some problems for her brother in the process.

In a statement to the website, Giacomo Gianniotti had the following to say about what some of the specific plans are going to be for both Andrew and his own sister stopping by:

“This year, we’re going to definitely have DeLuca’s character a little more fleshed out with the arrival of his sister from Italy … We’re going to see a new dynamic in the hospital as his sister arrives, and it’s not exactly good news; he’s frustrated by it.

“She has a very interesting and controversial — some would say — profession within the medical field, which makes him uncomfortable. It’s a thorn in his side, her being there, but everybody else is quite fond of her. She will be working [at the hospital], and she’s going to help tell the story of DeLuca and how he comes from Italy. They’re going to speak a little bit of Italian, which will be nice for the Italian fans, because [the show’s] so big in Italy.”

We were excited to hear about this casting news back when it was first announced, and we remain very much excited about it today. Through much of the past two years, DeLuca has been in a difficult spot. Because of the females that he is harboring for Jo (or at least did harbor), it because difficult to see the character in anything other than an adversarial light. He was tied to Alex’s legal problems, and he didn’t have an opportunity to do all that much at the hospital that started to endear him to some of the other likable people. This marks a chance for him to do something a little bit different, and we’re very much thrilled to be able to see the end result of it.

New episodes of the show are coming onto ABC this fall; while it’s great to be seeing this arrival plus the return of Kim Raver as Teddy, there are some departures to be on the lookout for. Take, for example, the news that we’re going to be seeing no more of Eliza Minnick after her arc on the show.
