Saturday Night Live: Will Melissa McCarthy ever play Sean Spicer again?

Melissa McCarthy

Let’s start off this Saturday Night Live article by making one thing very much clear: We don’t have any interest in getting super-political here. Nonetheless, you can’t acknowledge Sean Spicer in 2017 without acknowledging Melissa McCarthy. The actress/comedienne’s impersonal of him may have been the best moment of 2017 on the sketch show, or at least it was with her debut appearance. We had somewhat diminishing returns after that, though the whole kissing Donald Trump bit was amazingly absurd when that happened near the end.

Now, Spicer is out as White House Press Secretary, and that means that Sarah Huckabee Sanders will be the one primarily calling the shots there. Aidy Bryant played her the last time w saw her on the show, and we have to think that this will stay that way. Nonetheless, we do wonder the question very much as to whether or not we are going to ever see Spicer on the show again. Is one of the best impressions of the modern era of the show done?

If we did have to guess as to the future of Spicer on SNL right now, we’d say that it is. The McCarthy/Trump scene is a worthy finale for the character, and you have to remember that the show doesn’t premiere for more than two months. At that point, Spicey will probably be old news and there’s no real reason to bring the impression back.

In a way, this may be a good thing because it would be hard to top everything that McCarthy already did, and the character would start to lose a little bit of its bite if she did stick around too much longer. We’ll miss her, but we figure she’ll be back to host at some point in the future. When that happens, there will probably be some consideration to bringing back Spicer, but we don’t know what else you use him for rather than some cameo for nostalgic fans.

One other thing to remember here…

Hey, don’t forget about the fact that with the way the Trump Administration is going, there are probably going to be many more people to lampoon by the time the new season starts. This show is at its best with timely satire, and because of all of the headlines, the political comedy has had an extended life on the show. Typically, within a month or two after an administration starts the show starts to lose a little bit of steam with politics. Clearly, that’s not happening here, and if you somehow missed it, Alec Baldwin is going to be returning to play Trump once more.

Just for fun/the memories, you can take a look at the original and the best Spicer sketch below.
