Empire season 4 spoilers: Forest Whitaker secures multi-episode arc
As a new report from Deadline confirms today, Whitaker is going to be making a series of appearances over the upcoming stretch of episodes in the role of a legendary man in his own right, a man in Uncle Eddie who is a memorable name within the music industry. Without him playing Lucious on the radio so many years ago, there may not be a Lucious Lyon or an Empire Entertainment taking the world by storm. Lucious is in this man’s debt, and still you could see Uncle Eddie doing whatever he can in order to continue to lend a helping hand to him. You’re going to see this character do something of great value in order to help Lucious out in a moment of need, and this could be one of the big foundational story points for the rest of the season.
What we know at the moment is that Empire should be very much pleased to get an actor of Whitaker’s caliber on the show, given that he can take on a wide array of different roles, and excels at finding ways to make people seem human and multi-faceted. He’s going to be a great addition to a show that has brought in everyone over the years from Taye Diggs to Marisa Tomei, and we have to think that there could be even more where this comes from.
Guest stars are still well and good, and as much as we do enjoy the work of Whitaker, we also have to say that he is not going to be the thing that helps to effectively turn Empire around so that it is a little bit more of its old self. It needs to structure stories that are grounded and relatable for its main cast, and it’s started that in some ways with Jamal. Cut out some of the twists, and stick with everything that is real and people can identify with. You also do want to be careful about the sheer number of guest stars you allow into the fold, given that if you bring in too many, you put yourself in a position where it is difficult to keep track of everything that is going on and sometimes, it feels like you’re getting famous people for the sake of doing so.
