Saturday Night Live: Revisiting Jimmy Fallon’s John Travolta and more

Travolta

Tonight, Saturday Night Live is (alas) once again in repeats, but they are showing a pretty solid Jimmy Fallon episode from earlier this spring.

Is Fallon everyone’s cup of tea? Far from it, given that he is notoriously polarizing and not always the sort of comedian who goes hard. With this show, he did bring a lot of high energy, and even if some of his jokes were silly rather than hard-hitting, a few were very memorable.

Case in point: Him playing two different iterations of John Travolta during the Celebrity Family Feud parody. Just from the standpoint of effort alone, you have to salute him for going for this and constantly jumping back and forth on stage. For whatever reason, Fallon doing Celebrity Family Feud always wins. Remember when Justin Timberlake did it with him and caused him to break by doing his own impression of Fallon? Sometimes, Jimmy breaks a little too much for it to feel organic, but it absolutely did in that instance.

Also, this clip from Jimmy was also in part funny just because we can see the truth in it with Travolta over the years. (We tried to pull the clip for you to watch now if you’re not checking out the repeat tonight, but the problem is that for whatever reason, it’s already expired and it’s no longer online.)

As for another memorable sketch for a very different reason, the entire “Take Me Back” piece was wonderful as a surprise sketch where it was all about the past few lines of it. This is great watching back knowing what you’re building to, given that it’s incredibly funny to pay attention to everything that is said beforehand.

Let’s be honest — it’s late when you watched this the first time, and there were probably plenty of people out there who were tired and gave up on this sketch 30 seconds in, wondering where the joke was. There’s a lot of value on looking at it now with fresh eyes. Luckily, in this case the video’s still online and you can watch it whenever you want.
