Better Call Saul season 4 renewal: Why hasn’t it happened yet?

Better Call Saul season 3

It’s clear that most everyone out there wants a Better Call Saul season 4 renewal. Unfortunately, that very thing hasn’t come yet.

What is the reasoning for that? Given that this is AMC and there is not often a clear timetable for when they want to renew or cancel any show on their schedule, it’s hard to formulate any sort of precise answer to that.

First, it’s worth backtracking slightly: Better Call Saul was renewed for a third season on the network in the middle of March, right after the airing of the fifth episode of the season entitled “Rebecca.” While season 3 did start a good bit later in the year, nonetheless seven different episodes have all passed without a renewal being announced just yet. What gives? Being that this is a critically-acclaimed series that serves as a prequel for Breaking Bad, the easy assumption is that something as simple as a renewal would be considered a lock.

In terms of the show’s ratings, it may be easy to want to sound the alarm over them. To date, season 3 is down over 30% in adults 18-49, but only when you consider the live+same day metrics. While that is disappointing for sure, it’s still not drawing terrible numbers by any means. It’s also been consistent throughout the season, indicating further that the viewers who are watching the show are loyal. They’re not planning on bailing at some point in the near future if the going gets tough with an episode or two.

Beyond the live ratings, the show is also a warrior in the DVR numbers, and routinely continues to generate further viewership on Netflix. There were so many people who streamed Breaking Bad, and it’s fair to assume many other people are doing the same thing here.

One of the biggest problems with Better Call Saul virtually from the inception of it was the lack of immediacy needed to watch it. Since you already know technically the ending of Saul’s journey leading up to him working at the Cinnabon, it’s harder to be spoiled in the macro sense. Instead, the “spoilers” come more from such things as Chuck at the bar hearing or some cameos from various characters on the main show. Often, that’s not enough to move the needle when it comes to a season 4 renewal.

Ultimately, expect this renewal to come by the time the final airs next month. If not, it’ll be more surprising than the words “squat cobbler” ever entering the realm of public consciousness.
