Supergirl season 3 spoilers: Floriana Lima will only recur as Maggie

Lima

Throughout Supergirl season 2, Floriana Lima established herself as a central part of the story as the character Maggie Sawyer. She and Alex Danvers (hence the ship name Sanvers) became one of the most popular couples within the entire DC – CW universe.

However, her time is now looking as though it will be more limited than first thought. As according to Entertainment Weekly, Lima will only recur through season 3; she will appear in multiple episodes, but not be a regular with a guaranteed presence. Much of the reason for that seems to be a decision on Lima’s part to pursue other projects to go along with her work on the show. This doesn’t appear to be a Sophia Bush – Chicago PD situation where she wants to move on altogether, but it may reduce the total amount of Maggie screen time as a whole.

Basically, what’s being said here is that it’s possible that Sanvers remains a part of the show, even if Maggie is not someone who graces every episode. Maybe she goes undercover somewhere for a stretch of time, or lands another job that keeps her away and turns her relationship (or possible engagement, given the finale cliffhanger) into more of the long-distance variety.

In a statement, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said the following about the news:

“We adore Floriana and have loved working with her to tell this inspiring story … Although she’s not available to us as a series regular next season, as she’s looking to pursue other opportunities, we’re happy she’ll be returning for multiple episodes in Season 3.”

Supergirl season 3 filming begins this summer, and of the key orders of business right now is casting the new major character Reign. She is a recent, fearsome villain from the comics who is a true Supergirl enemy, and will appear in a good part of the season. As of now, it’s fair to call her the Big Bad more so than anyone else the show opts to introduce.

Alas, there is still no word on the future status of one Chris Wood (who plays Mon-El), but this may be very much intentional for now.
